Year Nine Options 

In Year 9, you have studied two option subjects that you chose at the end of Year 8.

You will continue to study these subjects in Years 10 and 11.

You now need to choose your final two Key Stage 4 option subjects.

Our Key Stage 4 Curriculum

All students study English, Maths, Science and core PE and one of History or Geography. The table below shows the Year 10 and 11 curriculum, with the number of hours per fortnight spent studying each subject.

Types of Qualification

There are two types of qualifications at Key Stage 4:

• GCSE 9 – 1
• Technical Awards

GCSEs are assessed primarily through final examinations and grades are awarded on a 9 to 1 scale. GCSEs do not usually have coursework or controlled assessments.

Technical Awards take a more practical approach and are assessed through coursework and/or controlled assessments alongside the external exam component. Technical Awards equate to GCSE grades as follows:

Level 2

Distinction* – 8.5

Distinction – 7

Merit – 5.5

Pass – 4

Level 1

Distinction – 3

Merit – 2

Pass – 1.5

Choosing your Options

You should spend time thinking and talking to your teachers and family about which subjects are the best choices for you.
Choose subjects that you enjoy, believe you can succeed in, and think about whether a subject is important for your future.

Our Year Nine Options Form is now online. Please complete it by Wednesday 14th May 2025:

Please select ONE subject from each option box on the form.

One of these options MUST be HISTORY or GEOGRAPHY (you can study both if you wish).
